Austrian Art Nouveau Imperial Amphora Vase with Birds

About the Item

A large and impressive Art Nouveau/Jugendstil Austrian Imperial Amphora art pottery twin handled vase with tube lined bird designs dating from the early 20th century. In addition to Reissner, Stellmacher, and Kessel marked works, there were a number of very high quality works which were produced at the Imperial Technical School for Ceramics & Associated Applied Arts from which many of the Amphora designers and artisans graduated. Created in 1885 and continuing until 1917, the school was a decorative arts and design academy which taught students how to sculpt clay in a manner that was both complex in technique and reflective of "themes" such as nature which was so influencing the Art Nouveau period. This example is of large cylindrical shape has a fold in top rim applied with small loop handles to either side. The vase is decorated with two Crow like birds standing in tubelined outline and applied with raised coloured enamels set against a matt mottled brown ground above a green wreath applied over a blue colored lower body. The vase has simple geometric patterning to the opposite side with simple roundels picked out in sky blue against a deep blue upper rim. The vase has various impressed marks to the base including an IMPERIAL TURN mark along with a crown and Amphora and AUSTRIA mark, The vase is numbered 11612. Provenance: Acquired from a private collection in the UK. In good condition with a glaze firing flaw to the base.

  • Austrian Art Nouveau Ceramic Portrait Vase Amphora Gold Brown Ochre, circa 1897
    By Nikolaus Kannhäuser, Amphora
    Located in Klosterneuburg, AT
Austrian Art Nouveau Ceramic portrait vase designed and painted by Nikolaus Kannhäuser manufactured by Amphora-Werke Riessner, Stellmacher & Kessel Turn-Teplitz circa 1897 A remarkable example from Amphora is this portrait vase painted and signed by Nikolaus Kannhäuser circa 1897. It is an excellently preserved piece from a series of vases that represent Kannhäuser's engagement with Mucha's early work. Especially characteristic are the stylized facial features of this young beauty. The reduction of the color palette and the focus on equally straight as well as precise executions also evoke a homage to Mucha's significant style, which is masterfully reinterpreted here. The en-face depiction of the woman's portrait captures the attention of the viewer in an intensive way. Her gaze seems unagitated and yet inviting, peaceful and yet self-confident. Once torn from the protagonist's eyes, the spiral relief ridges direct the eye's gaze to the vase's refined form. The background of dense and leafy trees also fits harmoniously into the overall picture of this work of art and underlines the motif of flora in terms of content. marked with „NK“ underlined, “AMPHORA TURN...
