About the Item

A rare and fine Turkish, Ottoman revival, Canakkale treacle glazed duck ewer dating from the 19th century. Lightly hand potted in a dark, probably terracotta clay the ewer is formed as a swimming duck with raised tail feathers and tucked in wings with its head on an extended feathered textured neck held to one side. The body is applied with the traditional stylized floral applications so often found on this type of pottery and the duck has a filling spout and raised loop handle applied to the top of the body with its beak acting as the pouring spout. The duck is decorated in thick treacle colored glazes and is typically not marked. Canakkale is a strategically placed city in northwestern Turkey in the Marmara region, on the Dardanelles Strait and is renowned as an important centre for ceramic production during the Ottoman Empire. The unusual style of the earthenware combined with its glazed finishes was extremely popular and sought after and expect that the location of the potteries gave easy access to markets both at home and abroad. Provenance: From the private collection of a gentleman and acquired from the UK Art Market. A rare example in good presentable condition with light wear and few minor areas of glaze rubbing and chipping.
