About the Item

This is a very good sauce tureen made of ironstone (Spode's Stone China) in Pattern No 5519, produced by the English, Copeland & Garrett - Spode factory in the 19th century, Circa 1837 to 1847 The piece is very well potted with two side handles standing on four short legs. The lid has a moulded handle to the top and a side cutaway to its edge for a serving spoon. It is very well decorated in a Chinoiserie floral-leaf pattern, with two interlocking rings, all in the Imari palette of burnt orange and blue, hand painted in various shades, together with detailed hand gold gilding. The pattern is 5519 and was transfer printed under-glaze, then very carefully hand-painted. The base of the tureen and the lid have Copeland & Garrett's blue printed crown mark for the period with other factory marks and the pattern number in red.
