De Simone Ceramic Plate, Italy, 1960s

About the Item

De Simone ceramic plate, Italy, 1970s, measure diameter 44 cm. The brand was born in the 1960s from the creative flair of the Palermo nobleman Giovanni De Simone and soon established itself in the panorama of Sicilian artistic ceramics thanks to a unique and original style that mixes the folklore of the island and the suggestions of the great masters of modern art, such as Picasso, Matisse, Léger and Klee. This dish, in particular, is inspired by the Sicilian tradition. Note the Etna volcano in the background. Considering the age, the plate is in good condition; On the back there are "craquelure" (small cracks visible on the surface of the glass paste, due to the years), which do not affect the integrity and value of the piece.

Large orange Giovanni De Simone 1960 vase with Picasso style warriors. In his hometown he founded his own workshop "Maioliche d'Arte De Simone" at piazza Leoni 2 in Palermo: it was the 1950s and here he devoted himself to the production of use ceramics and decorative wall tiles and traditional furnishings painted by hand. The light-hearted reinterpretation, full of bright shades that also reflect the most traditional Sicilian art...
