Delft Blue and White Landscape Dish, Makkum, 1775-1800 Tichelaar Pottery

Blue and white landscape dish. Makkum, 1775-1800 Tichelaar pottery. painter: Douwe Klases Hofstra [attributed to] The dish has a wide and raised flange and is painted in blue with a simplified village view, framed within four circles. The flange is unpainted. Three stilt marks, which are characteristic for majolica, are visible in the centre. Dimensions: diameter 31,5 cm / 12.40 in. From 1796 to 1813, Douwe Klases Hofstra (circa 1767-1815) was the first painter of the Tichelaar family pottery in Makkum. He succeeded Gatse Sytses, who held this position for over thirty years. Hofstra had been working for Tichelaar since 1783, where he was trained as a painter by Sytses. About 170 objects by Hofstra are known, including circa twenty majolica dishes. Condition: this dish is in very good condition, especially considering its age of over 220 years. There are the usual rim chips.

    The blue and white dish has a narrow, flat flange and is painted in the centre with a Chinese figure in an oriental garden landscape in a double circle. The brushwork is executed in blue within purple outlining on a light blue-coloured tin-glaze. The Chinese figure carries a guzheng, a Chinese zither, wrapped in a cover. On the well and flange are six different landscapes and terrace scenes, partly filled with Chinese men and women.
