About the Item

Paul Philp ( born. 1941 ) Previously lecturer at Londons Central School of Art and at Corsham, Philp is based in the South West of England and now devotes himself to the creation of beautiful organic stonewares . He has featured on the front of "Ceramic Review" and two publications exclusive to his work have been issued. Philp works in china clay mixed with Devon ball clay, with the addition of wood ashes, and fired at high temperature. Paul Philp is a studio potter with over 50 years of experience, creating ceramics by hand without the constraints of a potter’s wheel. His pieces undergo multiple high-temperature firings with careful application of finishing materials. Studying ceramics at Cardiff Art School, he also restored Llansôr Mill using traditional methods, which took 15 years and temporarily sidelined his pottery. Since then, he has focused on studio pottery from his home in Bath, UK. Philp's work is in prestigious collections such as the Musée des Beaux Arts in Montréal and the Cité de la Céramique in Sèvres. He has held solo exhibitions in prominent galleries across Europe and the USA. He aims to evoke a sense of classical serenity and timelessness in his work, preferring viewers to interpret his pieces intuitively.
