Georges Jouve Terracotta Nativity

About

A glazed brown terracotta nativity modeled by Georges Jouve, circa 1943. Unsigned. Stamped Dieulefit. A few very small lacks of glaze. Not restored. Taken as war prisoner at the very beginning of the war, Georges Jouve escaped in 1943 and took refuge at Nyons in France. He started to model figures inspired by vernacular pottery, specially, religious figures produced at Dieulefit and took his pieces to the Dieulefit Jacques courtier workshop to be fired. The virgin and the animals modeling is typical of Jouve design.
