Georgian Mason's Ironstone Small Platter (B) in Basket Japan Pattern, Ca 1818
About the Item
This is an early Mason's Ironstone pottery small rectangular platter, hand painted in the very decorative basket Japan pattern, produced by the Mason's factory at Lane Delph, Staffordshire, England, in the George 111rd period, circa 1813-1820.
The plate is rectangular with canted corners and a notched indented rim.
The platter is hand decorated in one of Mason's most beautiful chinoiserie patterns, called Basket Japan, which is also one of their most collected and striking patterns. The pattern is boldly hand painted, over-glaze in enamels of cobalt blue and burnt orange all in varying shades, possibly over an under-glaze printed outline. This pattern is illustrated on page 103 of Mason's pattern book published by The Mason's Collectors' Club
The base is unmarked as was often the case, particularly when the piece was part of a larger Dinner or Desert service of many pieces. However this platter is definitely by Mason's and a very early piece, dating to circa 1813-1820, as ironstone was only produced by them from 1813, which is late George 111 period.
This plate exhibits the free flowing quality and boldness of the hand painting that is seen on the early Mason's pieces.
