About the artsit
For as long as he can remember, Arnaud Roy has always fashioned objects and images. After studying fine arts in his native city of Le Havre in Normandy, he explored oil and acrylic painting for a number of years, parallel to a strong interest for the techniques of ikebana –Japanese flower arrangement— and kokedama. His desire to design vessels and vases for these living sculptures drove him one day to push the door of a pottery studio. His encounter with ceramics began in 2014 and marked a decisive turn in his artistic endeavours. He attended for two years the workshops of Sandrine Pagny, with whom he learned the techniques of pinching, coiling, slab building and throwing. One of his first personal gestures was to scratch and slash clay, so that after the firing process his pieces ended up looking like burnt tree bark. The endless possibilities of clay have since allowed him to experiment with textures and shapes, steadfastly carving out his idiosyncratic path and developing his own artistic language, sometimes even creating specific tools to materialise his ideas. He has patiently perfected his signature slashing technique on very thin slabs, using black, gray or honey blond stoneware before it is leather hard and shaping it like a piece of fabric to create petrified waves that feel like they have been transfixed in motion in their upward thrust. All his pieces have an organic feel to them. He doesn’t strive to imitate nature but all the ornamental vessels and works that take shape under his fingers conjure up the mineral, vegetal or aquatic worlds in all kinds of way: strange stranded shells; nest-like vessels with an outer skin looking like burnt bark; volcano-shaped vases. To a large extent, his ceramic pieces are infused with the essence of the places he is attached to and are inspired by his extensive travelling throughout the Mediterranean and Japan –the clay cliffs of Normandy, the barren, rocky landscapes of Greece, the pottery villages of Japan and Catalonia, a land of artists, where he has a home away from home. He lives in the Eastern part of Paris and works at “Vents & Courbes”, the ceramics studio of artist and ceramicist Philippe Paumier.
