Goldscheider Art Déco Carnival Group 'Harlequin & Columbine', by Lorenzl c. 1929
About the Item
Depiction of a carnival dancing couple: Harlequin kissing the hand of his Columbine. The female figure in a close-fitting blue top with a low-cut front and long trumpet sleeves, a voluminous blue skirt with large floral decorations in blue, purple and green, and a blue hat with a four-pointed brim on the long, twisted blonde curls, the harlequin standing close behind her in a white Pierrot costume with black hems, black ruff and cap, draping a dark blue
cloak over the lady's shoulders and kissing her hand.
The group is based on a black, arched faceted round base, artist's signature 'Lorenzl' on the back of the dress, above the hem.
The model for the female figure was a photograph entitled 'Mrs Castiglione at a Viennese costume party'. This refers to Virginia Oldoini Rapallini, Countess of Castiglione (1837-1899), better known as La Castiglione, an Italian
aristocrat who achieved fame as the mistress of Emperor Napoleon III of France. She was also considered an important figure in the early history of photography. From 1856, she posed for Mayer and Pierson, the hotographers favoured by the imperial court. Over the next four decades, she commissioned Pierre-Louis Pierson to help her create 700 different photographs in which she recreated the characteristic moments of her life for the camera. She spent a large part of her personal fortune and even went into debt to continue this project. Most of the photographs show the countess in theatrical costumes.
Designed by Josef LORENZL (1892 - 1950), was an Austrian sculptor and ceramic modeler. His bronze statuettes often show graceful dancers with long legs and closed eyes. Lorenzl designed numerous ceramics for Friedrich Goldscheider and Keramos and was one of the most popular artists of Art Deco.
Model 5939 was created in 1929.
