Goldscheider Vienna Art Déco Figure 'Ruth' Dancer In Oriental Costume, by Rosé

About the Item

Depiction of dancer Ruth Saint Denis (1877/79 - 1968, actually Ruth Dennis, 'Miss Ruth') performing her dance 'Radha'- Dance of the Five Senses, first performed in 1906. Dancer with her hair pinned up and decorated with pearls, her head tilted gracefully to one side, wearing a bustier and a long, wide skirt held around her hips with a triple belt, holding it at the sides with her raised hands, bell straps on her anklets, one leg placed one step in front, behind her two baskets filled with roses. On beige, three-passage, stepped base with light green painting, signature 'Rosé' on the back on the right rose basket. This model was executed in faience and marble/alabaster.     Depiction of a dancer in Spanish costume: she wears a mantilla, a veil cloth that covers the head and neck down to the shoulders. Often, as here, a high comb is also tucked underneath, the peineta. The cloth is still worn today for festive costumes and is mostly made in lace technique. In addition, the dancer wears an elaborately decorated with floral patterns asymmetrical ruffled skirt. On oval, black-beige marbled base in rare execution.
