Handbuilt Ceramic Sculpture, Pod Composite 'Black Coal' in Matte Black
About the Item
Hand Built Ceramic Sculpture, "Black Coal". A composite of hollow, elongated, pointed oval or elliptical shapes, individually hand-formed clay parts, attached together and fused during the firing. This is a dark stoneware with a black underglaze revealing all the scrapes and marks of the clay underneath. The individual parts are all different, together they create a landscape inspired by the huge bare boulders of the Anza Borrego Desert. But wait, there is a piece that is not attached, encouraging interplay and variation. but begging the consideration of the individual piece and how it fits with the larger group.

Helena Starcevic Ceramics produces work that straddles the line between fine and decorative art. Each piece is one of a kind, hand-built entirely by the artist in her New York studio. Taking inspiration from the natural world, Ms. Starcevic's work includes references to the stark beauty of the desert, prehistoric cave paintings, and the human form (within and without). Everything is filtered through Ms. Starcevic’s own singular aesthetic, at once quiet yet strong, meditative, and beautiful. Pieces are made in different clays and finishes, and at different scales. Groupings are available. Helena Starcevic’s ceramic pieces are held in private collections across the US and Europe. She has held numerous residencies including one at the Museum of Art and Design in New York City.
