Holdcroft Majolica oyster plate, English, circa 1875, Pond Lily pattern, the wells glazed in deep pink with a hue of lavender. Outstanding coloration and condition. No damage, repair or restoration. An extraordinary example of this well-known Holdcroft pattern, and of the best English Majolica, with all its seductive powers and whimsical charm. For over 28 years we have been among the Nation's preeminent specialists in fine antique Majolica. Measurements: D 7.5" x W 9.375" x H 1" inches Joseph Holdcroft established his Sutherland Pottery at Stoke-Upon-Trent, England, where he produced Majolica from 1870-1885. In his voluminous and seminal work, The Ceramic Art of Great Britain, Llewellynn Jewitt wrote in 1878, that he considered Holdcroft Majolica to be of a: "High class, both in design and quality of workmanship," And that "His productions rank deservedly high."
