Italian Maiolica Pitcher with a Rampant Lion, Center Italy , Ca 1850

About the Item

Italian Maiolica Pitcher with a Rampant Lion, Central Italy , Ca 1850 This unmarked Maiolica Pitcher with a cream white background is decorated on the front with a cobalt blue rampant lion. The remaining surface is decorated in dark blue with flowers of different designs and all under an intense glaze that enhances the different tone of colors. This type of workmanship can be dated back to ca. 1850, around the "Renaissance Revival" period. Numerous Italian ceramic factories dedicated themselves to this movement which copied models of Italian Maiolica from the 1400s/1500s. This movement ended around the early 1900s.
