Faience plate by Jean Lurcat signed by the artist Midcentury, circa 1950 Good condition Jean Lurcat 1892-1966 Jean Lurçat started his artistic career in Paris in 1912 where he frequented the circles of Picasso and Marcoussis. Influenced by Cubism and as a founder of the art review ‘Les Feuilles de Mai’, in which essays of painting doctrine were published, he spoke up for the avant-garde movement. A trip to Berlin and Munich in 1920 turned Lurçat’s eye to Expressionism. His extensive travels, to Spain in 1923 and to the Middle East, North Africa and the Sahara from 1924-1929, left another important and lasting influence on his painted work. In 1937, Lurçat turned his interest in tapestry-making into a professional business after signing contracts with the Beauvais weaving factories. He became world-renowned as an innovator of the medium. An important and successful painter of the École de Paris, singlehandedly revived tapestry-making as an art form during the 1930s. Lurçat's artistic eye simultaneously wandered towards a multitude of other media, including engraving, book illustrations and, most notably, ceramics. During the 1950s, Lurçat worked away abundantly at Firmin Bauby's Mas Sant-Vicens ceramic works in the Southern French city of Perpignan. Lurçat's association with the Saint-Vicens workshop gave it an international dimension, and other artists such as Picard le Doux and Marc Saint-Saëns followed to work there. Imaginary and mythological sea and wood creatures, as well as foliage, are winding their ways in thickly applied saturated colours overlaid with brilliant glaze. Creatures plucked from the Apocalypse and the Zodiac demonstrate Lurçat's fondness of the symbolic and poetry which formed the core of his artistic expression. Thus, a plate, a bowl, a jug or a tile, becomes an object of beauty and exquisiteness. Lurçat's poetry is ultimately derived from the excellence of the Art Nouveau style. In his unsurpassed love for all things rural, Lurçat was particularly attached to the rooster and the owl. Respectively synonymous for the sunrise and wisdom, both symbolize the awakening of the spirit. Lurçat's ceramics proved popular and were shown in 1952 at the Maison de la Pensée française, Paris, in 1963 at the Hannover Museum in Hannover, in 1964 at the Musée des Arts décoratifs in Paris. in 1965 at the landmark exhibition Ceramiche Lurça-Picasso at La Bussola Gallery in Turin, and in 2004 at the Académie des Beaux-Arts in Paris Lurcat was born in Bruyères, Vosges, the son of Lucien Jean Baptiste Lurçat and Marie Emilie Marguerite L'Hote. He was the brother of André Lurçat, who became an architect. After his secondary education at Épinal, he enrolled at La Faculté des sciences de Nancy and studied medicine. He went to Switzerland and Germany (Munich) and in leaving his educational path, he went to the workshop of Victor Prouvé, the head of the École de Nancy. In 1912, Jean Lurçat took residence in Paris with his brother André. He enrolled at the Académie Colarossi, then at the workshop of the engraver, Bernard Naudin. He met painters such as Matisse, Cézanne, Renoir; his friends included Rainer Maria Rilke, Antoine Bourdelle, and Elie Faure. Lurçat and three associates founded the Feuilles de Mai (The leaves of May), a journal of art in which these celebrities participated. He then became an apprentice of the painter Jean-Paul Lafitte with whom he had an exhibition at La faculté des sciences de Marseille. His first journey to Italy was interrupted in August by the declaration of war. Back in France, Lurçat joined the infantry, but was evacuated on 15 November after falling ill. During his recovery to health, in 1915, he practiced painting and lithography. In July 1916, he returned to the front, but was evacuated once again due to injury. He never returned to the front. In September, his art was put on exhibition in Zürich. Jean Lurçat began as a painter and tapestry weaver in 1915.[1] He became intrigued by tapestry weaving when he was learned of its history. His first tapestries, which he titled Filles Vertes (Green Girls) and Soirée dans Grenade (Evening in Grenada), were created before he returned to Switzerland in 1918. After showing his tapestries in a series of exhibition in Paris, Lurçat resumed traveling to Spain, North Africa, the Sahara, Greece and Asia Minor. Each of the places that he visited provided him with visual cues that would then show up in his work, so his travels can, in a sense, be traced through his tapestries. Upon his return, he signed a contract without exclusivity with his friend, Étienne Bignou, showed in several more group exhibitions, including a showcase of four tapestries in the Musée National d'Art Moderne, National Museum of Modern Art, and slowly became a name that was drawing attention in European press. In 1928 he went to America for his first exhibition in New York City. Several years later, he became recognized as an established artist and, in 1932, showed in an exhibition titled Sélections with Matisse, Picasso, Braque, Derain, and Raoul Dufy and, in 1933, moved to New York. While in New York, Lurçat began to create decorations and costumes for choreographed performances by Balanchine while he continued to work on his tapestries.

Jean Lurçat

Credited with helping revive the design and production of tapestries during the 20th century, French artist Jean Lurçat rubbed shoulders with some of the greatest painters in the world while weaving his own artistic narrative into the fabric of history.

Lurçat met artists Henri Matisse, Paul Cézanne and Pierre-Auguste Renoir in Paris in his early twenties — when the Bruyères native found himself fully immersed in the French art world. He had studied at Académie Colarossi and worked in the studio of sculptor Victor Prouvé, and later made paintings inspired by Fauvism. Lurçat first exhibited his tapestries in 1917.

Lurçat’s inaugural textiles were constructed with weaver Marthe Hennebert and were marked by Cubism and avant-garde–inspired art styles before he embarked on extensive travels that would enrich his work. Lurçat’s travels exposed him to other movements and styles that ranged from German Expressionism to Spanish and African influences that inspired his later works.

Lurçat’s tapestries found a regular home in 1925 at Jeanne Bucher’s gallery, which featured the work of other artists including Pablo Picasso, Hans Arp, Jacques Lipchitz, Georges Braque and Max Ernst. Between 1930 and 1936, Lurçat had solo exhibitions at the Flechtheim Gallery in Berlin and the Pierre Matisse Gallery in New York. In 1939 — when the popularity of tapestries had long been on the decline — Lurçat opened a factory with other artists in Aubusson, the home of a centuries-old tapestry production industry, in order to create modernist tapestries.

Over the course of his life, Lurçat designed more than 1,000 tapestries. One of his most notable, Apocalypse Tapestry (1948), is on display in the Church of Notre-Dame de Toute-Grâce and complements the original which dates back to the 14th century. His other highly acclaimed works include Song of the World (1957–64) and Four Seasons (1940).

While Lurçat’s best known works are his tapestries, he also produced engravings, book illustrations and ceramics. The Museum of Modern Art in New York City holds some of these book illustrations as well as a few other works in its permanent collection. Other works by Lurçat are held in the collections of the Detroit Museum of Fine Arts, the Musée Nationale d’Art Moderne, the Museum of Chicago, the Philadelphia Museum of Art and the National Gallery in Washington DC.
