About the Item

Longwy Faience Cloisonné-Style Enamel Charger with Dragon, Peonies, and Butterflies, 13", Late 19th Century Description A richly enameled French Longwy faience charger, measuring 13 inches in diameter, decorated in the cloisonné-style enameling for which the Longwy manufactory became renowned. The surface is animated by a central cobalt-blue dragon with orange flames and white highlights, framed by scrolling peony blossoms, leafy tendrils, and jewel-toned butterflies with a charming caterpillar detail at the rim. The background is covered in a fine, deliberate craquelure glaze, enhancing the depth and texture of the enamels. This charger exemplifies the Aesthetic Movement taste for exoticism and “art for art’s sake.” The combination of Chinese dragon and auspicious peonies evokes East Asian decorative traditions, while the addition of butterflies and a caterpillar highlights the fascination with natural forms. The bold palette—turquoise, emerald, cobalt, rose, orange, and black—creates a jewel-like effect reminiscent of cloisonné metalwork. Symbolism Dragon – a Chinese symbol of strength, vitality, and protection. Peonies – emblems of wealth, beauty, and spring renewal. Butterflies and caterpillar – associated with joy, love, transformation, and longevity. Together these motifs suggest a celebration of prosperity, harmony, and natural vitality, in keeping with the Aesthetic Movement’s love of cross-cultural symbolism. Techniques Faience earthenware with tin-glaze and crackled ground. Overglaze raised enameling in cloisonné manner, Longwy’s signature technique since the late 19th century. Vivid enamels applied within dark outlines, imitating the effect of Asian cloisonné metalwork. Marks The underside bears the impressed fish mark of the Longwy manufactory, together with incised production numbers and a painted decorator’s mark. These confirm authentic Longwy manufacture, most likely dating to the late 19th Century Dimensions 13 inches diameter Shallow profile with rounded rim Condition Good condition with expected light wear consistent with age, some minor surface marks, and a fine craquelure throughout, typical of Longwy glazes. Original wire hanger attachment present on reverse. Presents beautifully.
