About the Item

This 19th-century Majolica asparagus hand-painted plate was made in France. Asparagus plate in barbotine - slip decorated with colored asparagus in the middle part, wicker style texture on the lip and a scalloped yellow rim. Work by the Orchies manufactory marked n°4 on the back. The French earthenware Manufacture d’Orchies was created in 1879 by L’Herminé near the Belgia border where many other earthenware firms were established since the 18th century,. The Manufacture d’Orchies created many decorative pieces enhanced with vivid colors. The firm was absorbed by Moulin-des-Loups Hamage in 1923 and despite a rebound in the 1950s, the company definitively closed its doors in the 1980s. Plate reproduced in Maryse Botero, Artichauts et Asperges en barbotine, Paris, Massin, Paris, p.96.
