Melting Koala Playful Monster Ceramic Decorative Sculpture by Kartini Thomas

About the Item

With a childhood spent travelling with her parents on anthropological expeditions, listening to stories, myths and legends of real and surreal creatures from around the world, France-based, American ceramicist Kartini Thomas now creates joyfully disconcerting monsters. Her concern with the mythic is in fact the exploration of the state of being human and the meaning of identity stemming from her youthful experiences of extensive travelling. Her playful monsters are a way of proposing stories of alternative identities and origins in answer to questions who we are and if we need to be alike or different. Kartini Thomas has a very precise manner of working with glazing creating imaginary landscapes on the surface of her creatures. Some sculptures are richly decorated with small detachable porcelain parts, which become a separate play of interaction and contemplatio.
