About the Item

This Platter featured an almost lunar surface texture, with one of-a-kind hand done glaze, the latest from Tung Chiang and the Heath Clay Studio Design Series 4: Alchemy. Now in its fourth year, the Heath Design Series showcases the year-long work of the Heath Clay Studio, directed by Tung Chiang. In 2013, Design Series 1 explored the candleholder (where we got our current design); Design Series 2 took on the vase; and Design Series 3 opened up the world of lighting. This year, we celebrated Heath's enduring appreciation and respect for the mysteries and magic of glaze. At Heath, glaze is a big part of the DNA and history. Tung and his team featuring our master glazer, Winnie Crittenden, Edith Heath’s niece created over 300 one-of-a-kind works that focus on the possibilities of Heath’s glazes. Design Series 4: Alchemy brings us the results from both Tung’s signature application and firing techniques and Winnie’s decades of working with Heath glazes. This year, form served to showcase different contexts for the glaze. Tung designed tall vessels in a softened triangular shape; plates and platters; and grooved vases to show how glaze can react differently to shape: gravity in the case of the tall vessels, stillness on the plates, and flow in the case of grooved vases. The resulting glaze applications are richly textured, vibrantly colored, and full of wild molecular spontaneity. Tung and Winnie piloted several new glaze application techniques over the course of the past year. One such process involved rolling a vessel in glaze poured over a plastic sheet, building up layers one by one. Another process took Tung and Winnie on an exploration to find out how Edith Heath created certain effects: they discovered a technique of pouring glaze over grooved rows, letting gravity do (some of) the work. Consider these pieces unique works of art (they certainly are!) and we suggest handling them as such. They’re made with the same food safe glazes that Heath uses in production, but their special textures and finishes merit some extra consideration regarding use.
