Rare Art Nouveau AMC Wasmuel Set of Faience Pitcher and 6 Glasses, Belguim

About the Item

Rare set of a pitcher and 6 glasses or cups was created in characteristic Belgian Art Nouveau style with the use of warm, earthy tones and varied glaze finish on lightly textured shapes of the pieces. Predominantly brown-beige palette is accentuated with light blue glaze accents. Subtle variations in background glaze color and sparingly used drip glaze guide the eye towards the fluid shapes of the rim and the handle of the pitcher and enhance subtle texture of the glasses. The pitcher stands xx" tall, and the glasses - 3.25" tall; please note a manufacturing glaze defect on the rim of the pitcher that is not uncommon during the firing stage of glazed pottery. The pieces are marked on the bottoms. The interest in ceramics as applied art grew considerably among the Belgian artistic avant-garde in the 1890s, when artists were trying to define Belgian social integrity and identity against other European countries undergoing the same total design reform. A pull toward primitivism and interest in the crafts tradition through an understanding of earlier traditional and even rustic pottery contributed to widespread use of the vernacular as a dominant form, creating a distinct style of faience and ceramics. "Auguste Mouzin et Cie" (AMC), later renamed "La Faiencerie de Wasmuël", operated in the south-west region of Belgium called the Borinage, in small village of Wasmuël. From 1878 to 1951 AMC was producing fine quality ceramic pieces and ceramic clocks.
