Sculpture « Knight » by Albert Thiry

Rare sculpture of a knight in enameled earthenware by Albert Thiry, France vers 1950. Signed. Albert Thiry (1923-2009) Céramiste originaire de Nice, il étudie à l’Ecole des Arts Décoratifs de la Ville. Il s’installe avec son épouse Pyot Gavaudan dès 1943 au village de potiers de Vallauris. Il y poursuit sa formation de céramiste dans divers ateliers, notamment celui de Charles Voltz (1923-1997). En 1956, il entre comme décorateur chez Claire et René Batigne qui dirigent l’atelier du Tapis Vert depuis 1950. Il y côtoie Marcel Vertès et Anton Prinner qui l’initie à la sculpture. Il s’installe à son propre compte en 1962, rejoint par sa femme, Pyot Gavaudan qui elle était modéliste et décoratrice à l'atelier Giraud depuis 1956. Ensemble ils réalisent alors deux types de productions : l’une liée aux arts décoratifs (article de table et luminaires) et l’autre uniquement sculpturale (personnages oniriques et animaux). Ils mettent au point une technique de gravure en creux et de décor dans la terre chamottée. De 1966 à 1974, Albert Thiry participe aux Biennales de Vallauris et reçoit en 1971 le diplôme d’honneur.
