A delightful set of four handled appetizer dishes by Robert Picault, one of the most influential ceramists of Vallauris during the mid-20th century. Picault, who worked alongside Picasso, is celebrated for his instantly recognizable style: bold geometric and folkloric motifs painted in his signature palette of green, brown, and white glazes.
This set illustrates the diversity of his decorative vocabulary. Each dish is unique, featuring hand-painted patterns ranging from spirals and diamonds to abstracted flora and net-like grids. The elongated handles add both function and charm, transforming these utilitarian pieces into lively works of art.
Produced in the 1950s, at the height of Picault’s career, these appetizer dishes reflect the postwar revival of Vallauris as a center for artistic ceramics. Today, they are highly collectible for their blend of everyday practicality and expressive decoration, equally suited for serving or display within a curated collection of French mid-century design.

Robert Picault
Robert Picault was born in Paris. After studying ceramics at the Ecole des Arts Appliqués in Paris, he moved to Vallauris at the end of World War Two. Here, with Roger Capron, he founded the Atelier Callis in 1946. Two years later, he set up his own pottery in the Chemin du Fournas in the village. He was a friend, colleague and next-door-neighbour to Pablo Picasso, and the two learnt from each other aspects of the other's specialities. Picault was also an accomplished cinematographer and photographer, and made a series of four short films with Picasso and leading show-business personalities of the 1950s. He used copper oxide and iron oxide in his glazes, and the bulk of his work is characterized by green and brown geometric motifs consisting of noughts and crosses, bands and waves.
