About the Item
This rare set of polychrome enameled earthenware plates, from the Jules Vieillard & Cie manufacture in Bordeaux, features scenes inspired by Japanese art. Designed by Amédée de Caranza (1843-1914), these plates depict charming scenes of dressed mice in refined landscapes. These scenes are inspired by Hokusai's drawings, "Scenes with Mice." Each piece showcases delicate relief decorations on an ivory background with a black rim and bears the distinctive JVBL monogram on the back.
The meticulous compositions, such as cherry blossoms and aquatic plants, demonstrate the exquisite craftsmanship typical of the Japonisme style that characterized works from this period. One plate from this series is even displayed at the Museum of Decorative Arts in Bordeaux, highlighting their historical and artistic value. This set is an exceptional collector's item, referenced in Du Pasquier’s work.
It is a treasure for any 19th-century art enthusiast or collector of Oriental-inspired ceramics. Two of these plates have been restored, with invisible restorations.
