Set of FOUR Masons Ironstone Large Bowls in Chinese Dragon Pattern, Circa 1900

About the Item

This is a lovely set of four large bowls or deep plates by Mason's Ironstone, England in the Chinese Dragon pattern, dating to the late 19th century, circa 1900. The plates or bowls are circular in shape with a wavy molded edge. The bowls are all decorated in one of Mason's rare chinoiserie patterns called "Chinese Dragon" as documented on page 116 of A Guide to Mason's Patent Ironstone patterns, circa 1813-1848, published by The Masons Collectors' Club. The pattern is transfer printed in an unusual mauve / manganese color then individually hand painted in bold enamel detail of yellow, green and burnt orange and all with a subtle creamy-honey glaze. The base of the bowls have a printed rounded crown mark and banner, with Mason's above, and England below, all in a maroon color, with C 2631 hand painted below, which relates to the painter or pattern series. These bowls date to the late 19th-early 20th century, circa 1900. These are very attractive and decorative bowls either for use or display. ************** We have a second set of these bowls listed with a smaller diameter ************* of 8.75 inches. This larger set is 9.88 inches diameter.

Mason's Ironstone Bottle Vase in Chinese Dragon Pattern very rare, circa 1820
By Mason's Ironstone
Located in Lincoln, Lincolnshire
This is a very rare ironstone vase, in the Chinese style, all hand painted in the coloured dragon pattern, made by the Mason's factory in the early 19th century. Both the vase shape and the pattern are very rare. The vase has a bottle shape with a fairly tall neck, having two dolphin head handles, with attached loops. (NOTES ON SHAPE This vase style is a copy of a much earlier Chinese bronze vase shape produced in the Ming, Hongwu period of 1368 - 1398, which had similar decorative animal head side handles with loops. ( See the book Chinese Ceramics by He Li, page 216, published by Thames & Hudson. ). Also On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 204; The square handles and rings illustrate the metal origins of the shape of the vase. Similar examples have been excavated in Chinese tombs dating to the fifteenth and sixteenth century, suggesting that the shape was particularly popular at that time.) This vase is beautifully hand decorated in a more complex variant of the Coloured Chinese Dragon pattern, with strong coloured enamels depicting a green dragon on one side and a pink dragon...
