About the Item
Small glazed ceramic vase signed by Gilbert Méténier (1876-?) in France in the 1920s.
Son of Louis Méténier, Gilbert Méténier took over the family factory located in Gannat (in central France) in 1917. There, he developed a series of stoneware pieces in ochre and blue tones using iridescence and crystallization techniques. The factory employed around 12 workers between 1928 and 1940. These pieces were sold through representatives and in department stores such as Le Bon Marché, Le Printemps, and La Samaritaine in Paris. At the beginning of the German occupation in 1940, Gilbert Méténier decided to destroy all the molds so that they would not fall into the hands of the occupiers. He then left to live in Provence, where all trace of him was lost. The date of his death remains strangely unknown.
Méténier stoneware, sometimes called “bleus de Gannat,” is all the more sought after because collectors are assured of finding only authentic pieces. Due to the destruction of the molds and dies, it is technically impossible to make copies of the pieces created by this factory between 1920 and 1939.

Gilbert Metenier
Gilbert Méténier took over his father's company at the start of the 1920's. In June, 1940, however, when German troops arrived, the factory was closed, Méténier destroyed the moulds, leaving the region, perhaps for the South of France.
