Stephen Folch Plate in Bamboo & Basket Pattern with Royal Arms mark, circa 1825

About the Item

This is a rare early 19th century ironstone plate made by Stephen Folch of Church street, Stoke, Staffordshire Potteries, England between 1819 and 1829. The plate has a light grey-blue glaze and has been beautifully and carefully hand painted in a chinoiserie pattern in bold colorful enamels over a transfer printed outline. Mason's Ironstone made a very similar plate in the same pattern, called the Bamboo and Basket pattern. The plate is fully marked to the base with a Royal Arms mark having the Prince of Wales feathers behind and improved Ironstone China below, all printed in black. A Plate in this pattern with the same back mark is illustrated on Page 243, plates 186 a & b, of Godden's Guide to Ironstone, by Geoffrey A Godden, published by The Antique Collectors' Club. This plate is in good condition for a piece about 200 years old and is very similar in style to Mason's Ironstone of the same period but the quality of the painting is higher and similar to the high quality hand enamelling seen on Spode ceramics. Overall a very beautiful English ironstone plate.
