About

A handsome antique Mochaware quart mug or tankard that is wider at the bottom and slightly tapers as it goes up. Made in England, circa 1820, this mug was decorated with slip in broad machine-turned bands of orange and blue. The top of the tankard has two thin black stripes with rows of dots, and a single black stripe with a geometric pattern of overlapping ovals. The handle has a foliate design at each end.

Slip is a liquid mixture of clay suspended in water. Slip is often colored with oxides. Using a variety of techniques the colored slip is poured out onto the semi hard pottery piece.
