Very Large Wood-Fired Moon Jar

About the Item

11 1/2" h x 10" dia (5" opening) The history of the Korean moon jar is closely intertwined with the Joseon Dynasty and Confucian ideals of simplicity and elegance. Unlike most jars, which are designed for stability with a wide base and a narrow mouth, moon jars defy convention by having a wider mouth than the diameter of their base. This attribute adds to their allure and mystique. Hand thrown and glazed, sometimes in a wood fired kiln, the pieces are each slightly different and tactile, and each develop a personality with use, and so bring a sense of ritual to the everyday. Fired in an anagama kiln, which is fed with wood over a long period, this method gives each piece unique qualities depending on where the flames, smoke and ash touch them. This is pure alchemy riding the line between controlling the material and the accidental.
