About the Item
Vintage 1970's American sculpted ceramic Scottish Terrier figure by The Townsends. Depicted in a seated position this Scottie dog has been sculpted with incredible lifelike details. The resultant ceramic is crisp and has been painted and glazed to maintain a lifelike look. Signed "The Townsends" on the tail. This is a charming ceramic.
Though the word "ITALY" has been written on the underside of the piece, this is American made.
Townsend Ceramics & Glass Inc. was founded in 1969 in Titusville, FL. Originally started as Alaska Arts in 1964 with artist Ann Townsend at the helm. Ann Townsend was born in Alaska and was always creative. She started selling hand-painted cup and saucer sets of fine china. She later went on to creating Alaskan jewelry, as well as designing and painting men's ties and eventually a well known artists of landscapes and portraits. Ann and her family moved to Florida and opened Townsend Ceramics & Glass in 1969 and this is where the now famous, and much sought after, animal figurines got their start. Each animal starts as a sculpture, then a mold is made and from there the individual pieces which are all hand painted, are reproduced.
