About the Item

Set of vintage 4 tea or coffee cups and 4 saucers is decorated in the Denmark pattern in the unusual red or pink colorway. Usually the Denmark pattern is synonymous with blue and white colors, but the red and green variants were produced for a short time, making them rather rare and hard to find. Denmark is an iconic pattern for many English potteries; Furnivals, a prominent Staffordshire pottery, became a major producer of this popular blue and white design, making it one of their most famous and recognizable patterns. The pattern is based on the Royal Copenhagen "Blue Fluted Plain" pattern, first created by Frantz Heinrich Muller between 1776 and 1779 and inspired by Eastern designs brought to Europe in the late 18th century. Denmark consists of a repeating pattern of mussels and stylized flowers traditionally in an under-glaze blue on a white background; it is complex, but not overly elaborate, and stands out on any pure white background, ceramics or porcelain. Denmark Pattern was introduced in England by Furnivals a Staffordshire Pottery in the 1850's and was in continuous production until they ceased operations in the 1960's. Furnivals potteries were purchased by Enoch Wedgwood (Tunstall Ltd) and subsequently acquired by Josiah Wedgwood & Sons in the 1980's; post-1980s ‘Blue Denmark’ has been produced by at least two Waterford Wedgwood brands, Mason’s Ironstone China Ltd and Franciscan. The pieces are marked on the undersides; the Furnivals Viking Ship mark was used from 1890s to 1968 with variations in name on the sail. The elegant and decorative set will make a great gift to a porcelain collector or design enthusiast and will complement various tablescape styles, from Traditional to Mid Century Modern, Eclectic, Transitional, Grand Millennial, Glam, Maximalist, Collected, or Contemporary. We are offering a set of 8 salad plates in the same red Denmark pattern in a separate listing.
