19th Century Neoclassical Foliate Creut Silver Plate, Gilt & Etched Crystal Set
About the Item
This elegant and sophisticated set was realized in England during the 19th century. Sitting on four sculptural curved feet- resembling roaring oceanic waves of foliate forms- the bases suggest half egg shells incised with a wealth of abstracted and stylized neoclassical forms. Some of these motifs are easily recognizable as foliate forms, while others appear as curvilinear abstractions full of dynamic energy. These swirling forms surround ovals of unadorned silver-plate in the center of each spherical form, allowing a visual "break" for the eyes from this feast of elaborate chasing throughout. The interiors of the holders are finished in gilt offering a beautiful metallic contrast. The orbital crystal vessels housed within are etched with a wealth of neoclassical forms including crosshatching and swirling tear drop forms. The clear crystal stoppers are joined via a fine chain that snakes through an ovoid from that adorns the apex of the stylized foliate embellishment that ascends from the base. While this piece is a perfectly functional set- ideal for holding cordials, perfumes or other precious liquids- it is also an objet d'art in its own right that promises to add more than a touch of elegance to any surface that it graces. It is in excellent vintage condition.
