Small Bohemian Style Opaline Crystal Silver Plate Compote

About the Item

This a pearly opaline crystal silver plate compote. It feature a flower shaped crystal bowl with faded gilt border. The silver plate pedestal is decorated with some scrolls in the upper top, repousse acanthus leaf in the center, a fluted stem and some kind of rocaille pattern skirt at the base. There are two marks in the border of the base, but unable to identify them. Probably from French,German or Czech origin.

Based in Corning, NY, T.G. Hawkes & Co. (circa 1880-1959) was established by Thomas Gibbons Hawkes (1846-1913). Born in Ireland, Hawkes immigrated to Brooklyn in 1862, then moved to Corning, opening his own cut glass firm in 1880. His firm, T.G. Hawkes & Co., soon became famous for quality wares. Hawkes' glassware was used in the White House from 1885 until 1938. Hawkes pieces can be found in museums world-wide. Over one hundred years old, this lovely crystal compote with a sterling silver base evokes a time gone-by.
