About the Item

This Faïence fine service "Fontainebleau", inspired by the atmosphere of the Fontainebleau castle, was manufactured by the French firm Creil & Montereau in the late 19th century. Fine earthenware with a white background adorned with a very colorful and fresh decoration reminding the autumn, in the green, beige, red, and pink shades with prunus flowers and leaves. Very original shape, with already Art Nouveau's typical shape and details. Signed on the back "Service Fontainebleau, CM, Terre de Fer" or lead-glazed earthenware, quite often used by famous factories such as Minton as the quality of lead glaze is shiny and transparent after firing. Composition of the service and dimensions: - 44 dinner plates: 25.5 cm - 7 deep plates: 26 cm - 1 large oval platter: 45 cm W x 20 cm D - 1 medium oval platter: 40 cm W x 29 cm D - 1 round platter: 36 cm - 1 soup tureen: 36 cm W x 29 cm D x 27 cm - 3 small services dishes: 25.5 cm W x 14 cm D - 1 sauceboat: 28 cm W x 17 cm D x 14 cm H Fontainebleau is one of the most famous royal Château::8th centuries of royal presence, 34 kings, 2 emperors, 1.500 rooms, Fontainebleau can still claim to be the most furnished palace in Europe surrounded by beautiful trees! Napoleon I called it, unreservedly, “the true home of kings”. Creil & Montereau was created in 1840 with the fusion of two rival firms: Creil (created in 1774) and Montereau (created in 1745). This earthenware (and porcelain) manufactory was famous for its faïence fine (lead-glazed earthenware) and its English and Wedgwood inspiration and also for its technique of engraved image decal. Creil & Montereau manufactured the famous "Rousseau" Service with the engravings created by Felix Bracquemond in 1866 and became renowned for its whole production, enough to be mentioned in Gustave Flaubert's book 'Sentimental Education' (in French : L'Éducation sentimentale)!
