Blue and White Delft Plate or Dish Chinoiserie Scene Made 17th Century Ca. 1690

About the Item

Made in the Netherlands in the late 17th century, circa 1690, this extraordinary Delft charger is hand-painted in shades of cobalt blue. The soft blue pigment gives the charger a subtle touch. The fascinating naive decoration is styled after Chinese Kraak porcelains made for export to Europe in the 16th century. In the center of the charger, we see a Chinese scholar seated in a garden. A pattern of scrolling vines encircles the central scene. The wide border is decorated with panels showing a seated scholar alternating with panels showing Asian-style floral decorations, Dimensions: 10.25" in diameter x 1.25" tall Condition: Excellent with slight edge frits invisibly restored Price: $740 Background of Dutch Delft: By the mid-15th century, potters from southern Europe migrated through France to the Netherlands, and the earthenware industry became well-established in Antwerp. In the second half of the 16th century, many protestant artisans were forced to leave Antwerp under religious pressure. As a result, most moved to the northern Netherlands. The rise of the potting industry in the north of the Netherlands coincided with the decline of the beer brewing industry in the town of Delft. As the Delft brewers ceased production, their large abandoned buildings on the canals were quickly occupied by the pottery makers, who could utilize the vast spaces and the convenient water source to transport their raw materials and finished wares. In the mid-17th century, a war in China interrupted the production of Chinese blue and white porcelain to Europe. However, the potters in Delft were able to fill the void in the market, and they began producing earthenware in the style of Chinese blue and white porcelain." At the height of production, the city of Delft counted almost 40 factories making Delftware.
