About the Item

From the Creil region of Northern France, a transfer printed polychrome plate, titled – Le Polichinel. Circa 1830. Pulcinella is a classical character that originated in the Commedia dell’Arte of the 17th century and became a popular character in Neapolitan puppetry. The image shows No. 11 from a series of twelve. A young couple in period dress, the beau holding the strings of the Polichinel puppet, courting in a garden setting. The plate is titled and numbered, a wide hand-colored floral running border meets a Canary yellow rim. Wonderful bright color on a crisp transfer. Marked: Impressed Creil to the verso. Measures: 8 in. diameter x .75 in. height A tiny flea bite to the rim at 12:00, likely from a plate hanger.

A Creil et Montereau Canary Yellow creamware, transfer printed plate, circa 1830. Dating to the French Restoration period, this transfer-printed plate is glazed in the distinctive brilliant canary yellow for which the Creil and Monterau potteries were known. Printed in the neoclassic style, the image shows a man and woman in a romantic landscape, walking in front of a house.
