Delft Blue and White Armorial Majolica Dish, Harlingen, Dated 1744

About the Item

Blue and white armorial dish. Harlingen, dated 1744 The dish has a wide raised flange and is painted in blue with a coat of arms and the year 1744. The depiction is framed within a double circle, the flange is unpainted. Three stilt marks, which are characteristic for majolica, are visible in the centre. Dimensions: diameter 30 cm / 11.81 in. The coat of arms on this type of majolica dishes is a fantasy coat of arms and does not belong to a certain family. Dated dishes and shards of dishes are known with dates between 1712 and 1772, most of them are from the second quarter of the eighteenth century. These are seen as Frisian and for the most part attributed to Harlingen. However, they will also have been manufactured in other production centres.
