Nevers, glazed floor tile with the coat of arms of the Montesquieu family 17th C

About the Item

Rare Tin-glazed floor tile with the coat of arms of the Montesquieu family. This tile was made in Nevers, France, around 1650. An important member of this family was the French philosopher Charles Montesquieu (1689-1755). Spiritual father of the trias politica. In his 1748 book "De l'esprit des lois," he contrasted different systems of state. The U.S. Constitution of 1789 and the French Constitution of 1791 were largely based on Montesquieu's ideas. I do not know the origin of this tile, but it could be from the family castle: Château de La Brède. You can see that the tile has been walked on for a long time, there is some damage to all four sides and also to the glaze of the bottom left corner.
