About the Item

These hand-painted plates feature a bold zigzag pattern, a popular decoration in upscale Dutch Delft. The Bliksem "Lightning" pattern originated in Dutch Delft factories in the late 17th or early 18th century. The center of the plate displays an irregularly shaped medallion surrounded by flowering water plants, with zigzag lightning bolts emanating from the center and reaching out to three flower-filled circles. The remaining space is filled with more flowering plants painted in blue, green, yellow, and orange. The This set was hand painted in the Netherlands circa 1820. Dimensions: 8.75" diameter Condition: Excellent with tiny edge frits invisibly restored Price: $1,830 The Philadelphia Museum of Art has a plate in this pattern made in its collection at De Witte Ster, "The White Star," between 1705 and 1723. Background of the Lightning pattern: The Lightning pattern was made by several of the best Delft factories, including The Peacock, The White Star, and The Greek A, made the pattern. The pattern was inspired by Japanese porcelains imported into the Netherlands in the 17th century. For more information, please refer to E B Schaap's "Delft Ceramics at the Philadelphia Museum of Art" pgs 52 and 53, which includes a discussion and image of the pattern.
