About the Item

This beautiful set of three Dutch Delft chargers is hand-painted in a rich cobalt blue, featuring an image of a flowering fruit tree set before a garden fence. An identical dish is preserved in the collection of the Philadelphia Museum of Art. For a detailed image and discussion of its origin and attribution, see E. B. Schaap, Delft Ceramics at the Philadelphia Museum of Art, pp. 74–75. The scene, filled with blossoms and foliage, captures the lively naturalism that Delft painters so admired from early Chinese porcelain. The central motif is framed by a wide border of scrolling medallions and floral reserves, each rendered with precision and depth of color. The scalloped rims add a graceful dimension, enhancing the play of light across their surface. Each charger bears the mark of De Klaauw (“The Claw”), the workshop of Lambertus Sanderus (active 1763–1806), renowned for its finely detailed painting and saturated cobalt glazes. The brilliance of the cobalt blue and the density of the painting speak to the finest Delft craftsmanship of the late 18th century. The design fills the charger, creating a vivid sense of abundance and movement that makes these pieces particularly appealing to collectors today.
