19th Century Marescaux et Hahn Belgian Asparagus & Artichoke Majolica Plate
About the Item
An earthenware asparagus and artichoke plate, marked P. Marescaux et J. Hahn, Belgium, circa 1880.
Unusual for the coloring, and with mold work similar to Luneville or Saint-Amand-les-Eaux, this example shows purple tipped artichoke spears beneath the leaves of the plant glazed in a soft sky blue and pale pink. A deep sauce well shaped as the globe of the artichoke plant shows a bolder brown and green glazing. All of this on a lemon yellow ground. A scalloped rim and dimensional mold work.
Size: 9.25 in. Diameter x 1.25 in. Height
Book Reference: Artichauts et Asperges en Barbotine by Maryse Bottero. (Although incorrectly identified as being of German manufacturer)
The impressed makers mark with the mold No. 83 on the verso.
Showing the expected light wear and fine overall crazing.
