About the Item

In France, the term was 'Belle Epoche', but it was the Golden Age for much of the rest of the world - that period that spanned the divide between the 1800s and the 1900s, when industrialization and westward expansion had created a super class of wealth beyond any time prior, and the great middle classes were moving into a lap of luxury, as well. The grandest purveyors of luxury goods were commissioning fine wares from makers around the world, and the economy was booming. That is the period during which this stunning set of Royal Doulton plates was made. Made in England, but specifically for distribution through the Marshall Field & Co. store in Chicago, these were produced between 1902 and 1922. The set is 9" in diameter, so a luncheon plate, or sometimes thought of as salad or dessert plate, as well. Elaborately decorated, these layer so beautifully with my 1904 St. Louis Expo Limoges dinner plates, I'm tempted to just set them aside as my own. But try as I do, I really can't keep everything I find, so here they are for you all. Gold encrusted borders and inner ring outline the elaborate border decoration in high gold against the white china. Opulently crafted, they are hand decorated and you see that magnificent raised and hand applied 18k gold enamel accenting the gold garlands and decidedly 'Louis Kings' French decorative style. A set you'll want to frame, they're really that pretty! Very good to excellent condition, these appear to have never been used. They are rich and elegant in design and execution, finest line and motif of floral garlands, vases, rocailles, and they're opulent raised gold applied by hand. I see no chips, nips, hairlines, cracks or otherwise flaws to diminish either your enjoyment in owning them, or their value.
