About the Item

Derby Porcelain Set of Six Fruit-Decorated Plates, Pattern 126, Circa 1790 This exquisite set of six Derby porcelain plates, dating to circa 1790, is a testament to the refined artistry of the late 18th-century English porcelain industry. Each plate is a miniature masterpiece, featuring a central composition of fruit—including luscious grapes, plums, strawberries, raspberries, and apples—arranged within a delicate, heart-shaped gilt border. The rim of each plate is a vibrant yellow, richly highlighted with gold and a continuous polychrome leafy border, creating a visually harmonious and luxurious design. The layout and style of the plates bear a striking resemblance to the patterns recorded in the original Derby Factory pattern book, a historical document that meticulously cataloged the company's designs. The plates' puce crossed batons, "D" mark, and pattern number "126" offer definitive proof of their origin and place them within the high-quality production of the Derby Porcelain manufactory. Historical Context The Derby Porcelain Factory, founded in the mid-18th century, was one of England's most celebrated and innovative ceramic producers. By the late 1700s, it had gained a royal warrant and was known for its superb craftsmanship, elegant forms, and sophisticated painted decoration. The period around 1790, often referred to as the "Duesbury II" era after the factory's second owner, was a time of immense creativity and prosperity. Derby porcelain from this period is particularly prized for its classical designs and rich color palettes. The intricate fruit and floral decoration on these plates is a classic example of the botanical naturalism popular in late Georgian England. Such motifs were often inspired by botanical illustrations and were executed by highly skilled artists. The pattern number "126" on the reverse of the plates is a direct link to the painter William Longden, a well-documented artist at the factory. As referenced in Derby Porcelain by F. Brayshaw Gilhespy, Longden was known for his fine work, and his skill is evident in the delicate brushwork and vibrant colors of each piece. This set not only serves as a beautiful and functional object but also as a tangible piece of history, representing the high-water mark of English porcelain artistry and the specific contributions of its individual craftsmen. Condition Some typical minor gilt rubbing is present, consistent with age and use. Dimensions Diameter: 8.5 inches (22 cm). Reference Derby Porcelain, F. Brayshaw Gilhespy, Spring Books, London, 1965, page 52. (Ref: ny5431-lr)
