Pair of Chinese Armorial Plates with the Arms of Clifford
About the Item
border and the basket of flowers on the bottom. The border with
underglaze blue diaper on the outer rim and the border of the well.
Reference: The original service was originally ordered circa 1740 for the 4th Baron Clifford of Chudleigh. The family descends from Sir Lewis de Clifford,K.G. who was Ambassador to the court of France in the reign of Richard 11. A number of services were ordered, and it is known that a Samson service was also commissioned.t is possible that this service was ordered by Hugh, who succeeded his father to become the 5th Baron Clifford of Chudleigh in 1783.
David Howard in Chinese Armorial Porcelain', Vol. II, p.415, illustrates this service made for Charles, 6th Baron Clifford of Chudleigh, younger son of the 4th Baron for whom the original services were made. He was born in 1759 and married in 1786 to Eleanor Mary, daughter of Lord Arundel of Wardour, and who succeeded his elder brother Hugh. He died in 1831 and was ancestor of the present Baron.
A large number of these plates remain in the collection at Ugbrooke Park, Devon; the family seat of the Clifford family.
