Paris Porcelain Pair of Cabinet Plates, Fruits by Champion for Hébert, ca 1890

About the Item

On offer is a beautiful pair of plates made by a Paris factory in about 1890. The plates are hand painted with beautiful fruits and signed "Champion" by the artist, and carry a mark on the underside that indicates that they were made for Hébert, a fashionable retailer of the late 19th Century. There were many porcelain factories in early 19th Century Paris, and just as many decorating studios. Often items were made in a factory and then decorated in a studio; as is often the case we have not been able to identify which factory or decoration studio produced these plates but the printed mark on the underside that mentions Hébert, the fashionable retailer, indicates that the plates are probably from around 1880. The plates have a simple gilt line rim and very stunning paintings: one plate has figs and cherries, the other quinces set in their blossoms. Note that both are unrealistic: cherries ripen well before figs, and of course quinces can't be ripe at the same time as their blossoms! However unrealistic, they look fabulously realistic. Both paintings are signed "Champion" by the artist. The plates have a faint impressed factory mark that we have not been able to identify, and a clear printed mark "Hébert Fres, 3 Rue de la Paix 3, Paris". This was a well known retailer of homeware that operated in the last few decades of the 19th Century. CONDITION REPORT The plate with the quinces is in perfect antique condition; the plate with the figs and cherries has some crazing and three cracks coming off the rim, which make the plate slightly unstable. The plate still looks wonderful on display. This has been reflected in the price. Antique porcelain is never perfect. Kilns were fired on coal in the 1800s, and this meant that china from that period can have some firing specks from flying particles. Due to the shrinkage in the kiln, items can have small firing lines or develop crazing over time, which should not be seen as damage but as an imperfection of the maker's recipes, probably unknown at the time of making. Items have often been used for many years and can have normal signs of wear, and gilt can have signs of slight disintegration even if never handled. I will reflect any damage, repairs, obvious stress marks, crazing or heavy wear in the item description but some minor scratches, nicks, stains and gilt disintegration can be normal for vintage items and need to be taken into account. There is widespread confusion on the internet about the difference between chips and nicks, or hairlines and cracks. I will reflect any damage as truthfully as I can, i.e. a nick is a tiny bit of damage smaller than 1mm and a chip is something you can easily see with the eye; a glazing line is a break in the glazing only; hairline is extremely tight and/or superficial and not picked up by the finger; and a crack is obvious both to the eye and the finger.
