About the Item

* Origin:
Imari ware originated in the town of Arita in the former Hizen Province (now part of Saga Prefecture) in northwestern Kyūshū, Japan. The name "Imari" comes from the port city of Imari, from which these wares were exported, particularly to Europe, during the 17th and 18th centuries. 

 * Characteristics:
Imari ware is known for its brightly coloured decoration, typically featuring underglaze blue, iron red, and gold, often with black outlines and sometimes other colours like green. Designs commonly depict floral motifs, landscapes, and other Asian-inspired patterns. 

 * Historical Significance:
Imari ware gained significant popularity in the West, leading to a craze known as "Imari-mania". Its success also led to imitations by Chinese and European potters.

Exceptional 18th century Imari lobed dish. The centre painted with a vase of flowers and a bonsai tree.
