About the Item

Set of Sir Eduardo Luigi Paolozzi Wedgwood plates, variations on a geometric theme, complete set of six-one of only two hundred sets made. with Lucite box, circa 1971 The Eduardo Luigi Paolozzi porcelain plates are of bone china with vertical bands of patterns which include stripes, zigzags and circular patterns in red, black and gold. The effect of a complex, multi-sectioned surface of diagonal, zigzag and circular patterns was achieved with the screen-printing rather than the traditional painting on ceramics. The six plates are kept within their original pink slipcovers and plastic bags marked Wedgwood and are within a pink Perspex box and cover marked Wedgwood. One side of the box has a section out and repaired back. Note the gold on the plates does not display well in the photos. Wedgwood collaborated with the artist in this venture to produce a limited edition of 200 sets of fine bone china plates with decoration designed by Paolozzi. The project extends the artist's own interest in print techniques and the production of variations of the same theme, and the effects of different forms of printing on an image. Professor Sir Eduardo Luigi Paolozzi CBE FRA (1924-2005), was a Scottish sculptor and artist. Largely a surrealist, Paolozzi came to public attention in the 1960s by producing a range of striking screenprints - the medium which he used for the design of these plates. His works include the mosaic patterned walls of the Tottenham Court Road tube station and the 'Piscator' sculpture outside Euston Station. Paolozzi once stated that as an artist it is sometimes difficult to draw a line between 'art' and 'craft.' Despite being best-known as a sculptor, in 1968 Paolozzi was appointed visiting tutor in the Ceramics Department of the Royal College of Art, a post which he held until 1989 when he was appointed Visiting Professor. Paolozzi designed several ceramic ranges for companies such as Wedgwood Ltd. and the German manufacturer Rosenthal. For the Variations on a Geometric Theme, a dinner service of plates, he used his collage approach to design geometric patterns that could be printed mechanically onto the bone china plates, rather than the traditional approach to painting by hand. The process of casting objects in plaster, which he frequently employed in later years, was a significant outcome of his understanding of ceramic casting methods. Reference: There is a set at The Victoria & Albert Museum in London which was given by the artist Gallery location: Factory Ceramics, room 140, case 6, shelf 4. A set was in the Collection of H.R.H. The Princess Margaret. And also The Wedgwood Museum and The National Museum of Scotland. Sir Eduardo Luigi Paolozzi KBE RA (7 March 1924-22 April 2005) In 1968 Paolozzi was appointed to the ceramics department at the Royal College of Art, London. Shortly afterwards he was invited to make a set of plates by the firm of Wedgwood. The prototypes were made with the assistance of David Queensberry, Professor of Ceramics at the College. Paolozzi's geometric designs were made in the lithographic studios at the College and transferred onto the plates at the Wedgwood factory. There were six different plates, each a variant on the same geometric theme, issued as a boxed set.

Fornasetti Egocentrismo Porcelain Geometric Op Art Plates, Six Plates
By Piero Fornasetti
Located in Downingtown, PA
Fornasetti Egocentrismo Porcelain Geometric Op Art Plates, Six Plates 1990s The Piero Fornasetti six circular plates in black and white have geometric op-art patterns named " Egocentrismo". They are numbered 1,2,2,3,4 and 5. Dimensions: 10 1/4 inches Diameter x 1 inch high (26cm diameter). Mark: Marks and inscriptions: A hand holding a brush dipped in paint and 'EGOCENTRISMO'/ 'FORNASETTI - MILANO, MADE IN ITALY' over a green back stamp- Eschenbach below a crown and below Bavaria Germany and three stars- all in underglaze green. Condition. Two with some rubbing. One of the most interesting elements of Fornasetti's practice is his aesthetic dedication to figuration and fantasy. What makes the set of "Egocentrismo" so special is that the pattern is entirely abstract! A true anomaly from Fornasetti's massive body of work, this motif reminds us how experimental and creative he was. Clearly influenced by both historical decorative motifs, Op art and Italian design. (For example Egocentrismo #4 is a variation of a pattern often used by Gio Ponti) Reference: Fornasetti: The Complete Universe, page 617, # 172-173. Originally a set of six plates named Egcentrismo (Egocentralism). Example in V & A, London (Museum # C.66-1985) "Hard paste porcelain plate, without edge rim but with foot rim. Black printed decoration in 'op-art' style; view down a chequer board cylinder with a black circle at the centre. Place of Origin: Milan, Italy (designed) Date: 1950-1960 (designed) Artist/maker: Fornasetti, Piero, born 1913 - died 1988...

By Piero Fornasetti

Piero Fornasetti Porcelain Mesi & Soli Plates, "12 Mesi, 12 Soli", Twelve Suns, Twelve Months, Eight Plates, Mid to Late 1950s. Piero Fornasetti's "12 Mesi 12 Soli" series numbered 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 7, 8, and 10, showing the sun as a woman's face and each one representing a different month- May & June. Dimensions: 10-inch diameter x 1-inch high. The Piero Fornasetti Mesi & Soli Pattern Plates are a series of twelve porcelain plates that were designed by the Italian artist Piero Fornasetti in the 1950s. Each plate features a different month of the year, represented by a sun with the face of a woman. The plates are decorated in a whimsical and playful style that is typical of Fornasetti's work. The Mesi & Soli Pattern Plates were inspired by a calendar that Fornasetti created in 1942 for his friend, the Italian publisher Gio Ponti. The calendar featured a series of drawings of the sun with the face of a woman, and Fornasetti later adapted these drawings for the plates. The Mesi & Soli Pattern Plates were first produced in the early 1950s. Mark: Each with Piero Fornasetti printed...
