Ten Worcester Queen Charlotte Pattern Dishes 18th Century Circa 1785

About the Item

This set of ten Worcester porcelain dishes, manufactured in England in the late 18th century, features a hand-painted design in the Queen Charlotte pattern. (Each of the ten plates is shown in one of the first three images.) Each plate is decorated with radiating panels of cobalt blue scrollwork alternating with strawberry red floral motifs, all set against a creamy white ground. The dynamic swirl of the pattern creates a striking sense of motion and symmetry. At the center, a delicate pink rosette adds a quiet focal point, while the scalloped rims are outlined in gilding and framed with a red border of stylized blossoms and scrolls. The gilded, gently lobed rims add a touch of elegance. The Queen Charlotte pattern is one of the most celebrated designs of early Worcester porcelain. Named after Queen Charlotte, wife of King George III, the pattern gained royal favor when she purchased a service in this design in 1788, securing its reputation as a design of distinction. Marks: Several plates with the Worcester crescent mark and several with an impressed "B" indicating a date between 1792 and 1803. Dimensions: Seven plates measure 7.5" in diameter; three plates measure 7.7" Condition: Excellent antique condition. Very, very minor rubbing to the gilt; four plates have slight gilt retouched to the outer rim Price: $2,600 This set embodies the artistry and elegance of 18th-century English porcelain. Background of 18th Century Worcester Porcelain: In 1751, Dr. John Wall persuaded a group of thirteen businessmen to fund a new porcelain manufactory at Warmstry House on the banks of the River Severn in Worcester, England. The early wares were made of soft-paste porcelain, which had a body that included soapstone, lending the porcelain strength and a warm tone. The factory quickly earned a reputation for finely decorated wares. In 1783, the business was purchased for £3,000 by Thomas Flight, who had previously served as the company's London agent. Under the Flight family's ownership, the factory continued its tradition of producing elegant and technically advanced porcelain into the 19th century. In 1792, Martin Barr purchased a controlling interest in the Worcester Porcelain Company.
