Particular and refined pair of French potiches; the objects are made of black opaline glass, in perfect Art Noveau style. We can say that they are rare objects for two reasons, the first is that the black color is very difficult to achieve on this type of glass; the other reason is the special workmanship used to decorate them. The silver overlay technique was used, which is the application of silver by a galvanic method on a nonconductive surface such as glass. For their manufacture, the master glassmakers used white opaline glass and then by the method of hot fusion coloring, added small amounts of a metal oxide, in this case, cobalt-manganese, to obtain the perfect black, this processing ensures infinite durability to the color, which remains stable, unalterable, particularly vivid, homogeneous and intense. The silver overlay technique was developed in 1889 by Oscar Pierre Erard of Birmingham, England then perfected and patented in 1893 by an American from New Jersey named John H.Scharling. In our case an artist painter made the decorations by painting with meticulous care, on each potiche delicate chrysanthemum flowers and a pretty bird ( the Tufted Tit) using a dye that contained silver and oil of turpentine; the potiches were then fired at relatively low fire so that the painting would be tempered; at this point, the two objects were immersed in a silver solution through which a low-voltage electric current was passed; the silver bonded only to the design and not to the rest of the glass, and created a permanent fusion of the paint onto the glass itself. . The potiches were made between 1930 and 1935 in a craft workshop in Wimmenau, in the Vosges region, an area made famous by the important glassworks in the area (Saint-Louis, Lalique, etc.). The Tufted Tit (Lophophanes cristatus) is a graceful little bird that lives from the Urals to Spain, in Greece, Asia Minor, over the entire Italian Alps; The beak is thin, short, and pointed; the head is gray with small white dots; the characteristic tuft of feathers, from which it takes its name, appears dark gray and well raised, going to form a real "crest." The chrysanthemums depicted on the potiches, belong to the "Organza" type a chrysanthemum of Asian origin, pure white color, with a large and strongly textured flower, where each petal occupies a precise space in the complex geometry that botanists call "dancing" because it is inspired by the costumes of the ballerinas in "Swan Lake." Chrysanthemums are perfect flowers for expressing various positive emotions. Positive connotations that can be communicated include happiness, longevity, cheerfulness, royalty, and, of course, love and beauty. They are also the birthday flowers for those born in November.
