Centerpiece Plate, Design by Vittorio Zecchin in Blown Murano Glass, 1940s

About the Item

Large centerpiece plate, design Vittorio Zecchin (1878-1947) in blown Murano glass. Origin Italy Period 40s Author Vittorio ZECCHIN (Murano, May 21, 1878 - Murano, April 15, 1947) was an Italian artist. Son of a Murano glassmaker, Luigi, he graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts in Venice. Impatient with the late nineteenth-century realist culture that he encounters here, he feels rather attracted by the stimuli offered by the Venetian Biennials that he attends by coming into contact with symbolist research and with the environment of the Viennese Secession. In 1914, together with the painter Teodoro Wolf Ferrari, he presented some glass made at the Barovier glassworks at the XI Biennale. After 1918 he favors the applied arts. From 1921 to 1925 he was artistic director of the company Vetri Soffiati Muranesi Cappellin Venini & C. for which he created classical pieces in light glass and with delicate colors; inspired by the 16th century pictorial style of Venetian painters, these vases were the first examples of modern Murano glass works. After the experience with Cappellin Venini, he continued, during the thirties, to devote himself to the creation of very refined glass, collaborating with various glassworks: Ferro-Toso (1930), A.Ve.M. Murano Glass Art (1932-1933), Salir (1932-1938), Barovier Seguso Ferro (1933-1934) and Fratelli Toso (1938). Also during the thirties and in the last decade of his life, he also dedicated himself to teaching by collaborating with various Venetian professional institutes including the "School for the Glass Industry" of Murano (in 1934) and the school for glassmakers' apprentices " Abate Zanetti ”(from 1936), making use of two brochures he himself wrote in his didactic activity, one on the history of glass, the other on mosaics; and also the Vendramin Corner professional school where he deals with tapestries and embroidery.
