Green Glass and Metal Solifleur by Meyrs Neffe after a design by Joseph Hoffman

About the Item

Striking tall thin green glass vase by Meyr's Neffe of Bohemian with a stylised metal top, winged by two quarter circle metal flanges decorated with large circular holes - balancing a wide domed circular glass base. A simple but very effective and unusual design. Meyr's Neffe often employed the great designers like Josef Hoffman to deign pieces from them and then they would modify the pieces for other functions and shapes with their own designs -so this is a Meyr's Neffe design based in a Hoffman original design. The vase has both elements of Vienna Secessionism and Wiener Werkstätte (Viennese Workshops) and sits squarely between their dates -Hoffman designed for both. At its peak (circa 1875) Meyr's Neffe was probably the biggest and best art glass house in the world, with, at one time, eight large scale factories to its name. Meyr's Neffe produced drinking glass and other glassware designed by most of the great decorative artist of the time, most notably Koloman Moser and Josef Hoffman and much of their production was for the two great Viennese distributors Bacalowitz and Lobmeyr and later for the Wiener Werkstätte. Sadly in 1922 Meyr's Neffe was absorbed into Moser.
